Learn More About Green Card Sponsorship

What is Green Card Sponsorship?

While many people may think that entering the United States and becoming a U.S. citizen is relatively easy, you may be surprised at the dedication required to sponsor a visa. If you are interested in learning more about how you or a loved one can become a sponsor for someone trying to become a U.S. citizen – keep reading. In the following article, we’ll go into more detail about what is a green card sponsorship and the different types of sponsorship you can take on if you are a legal U.S. citizen.

Different Types of Green Card Sponsorship

There are three main ways to be a visa sponsor for someone trying to become a U.S. citizen:

  • Family sponsorship
  • Employing a non-U.S. resident
  • U.S. government’s visa lottery

A family visa is the most common way for people to sponsor other immigrants coming into the United States. However, family green cards are fairly restricted. Immediate family members can be sponsored easily enough (this includes spouses, unmarried children under 21, and parents of U.S. citizens) but extended family members (aunts, uncles, or siblings) must be prepared to wait for a good deal longer for their petition to be approved. To sponsor your family member, you must fill out and file form I-130.

With regards to employment-based visa sponsorship, the United States can deliver up to 140,000 employment-based green cards. Priority is given to:

  • Executives or managers of global corporations
  • Outstanding researchers or professors
  • People with extraordinary abilities, like sports stars, artists, or scientists

Be aware that entrepreneurs, workers from specific industries, or people that have a job offer through an employer can also qualify for a green card. U.S. immigration works on a quota system, however. This means that only so many green cards are given out to each specific country every year. People trying to immigrate from Mexico, China, India or the Philippines can expect a particularly long wait, as these countries submit the highest number of visa applications.

Finally, each year America allows 55,000 prospective immigrants to obtain a green card through the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery. The lottery specifically targets immigrants from countries with the lowest number of green card applications to the U.S.

What is a Geen Card Sponsor?

A green card sponsor is an individual who signs the affidavit of support. The sponsor is usually the petitioner who filed an immigrant petition on behalf of the intending immigrant.
